Dear Friends of Deep Eddy,

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department has launched Our Parks, Our Future, PARD’s Long Range Plan for the growth of the park system. Community meetings will be held Nov. 8-14 all across that city. We need the help our park partners to get the word out!

We have put together a Promotion Kit, which has everything you need to help us promote the meetings including links to flyers and social media guides.

Thank you for your assistance and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or comments.

Deep Eddy New Well Project

Posted on: October 14th, 2018 by admin No Comments

Hello friends and swimmers! I am proud to announce that Friends of Deep Eddy has been awarded another grant for our New Well Project. This grant is a 2018 Fall Heritage Grant from Visit Austin, in the amount of $40,054! These funds come from hotel taxes and are used towards projects with both a tourism and a heritage focus. Now, in addition to the previous two grants of $25,000 from the Austin Parks Foundation and $50,000 from the Hershey Foundation, we have a total of $115,054 raised for our well project. This gets us to within $40,000 of the budgeted $155,000 total.

We are excited that the new well will be much deeper and steadier than our current water supply, enough to provide cool clear spring water for many years to come. As you may know, the project is slated for this coming winter season, and I hope to begin the process of scheduling construction soon. FODE has money in the bank so I feel confident we can proceed. But we do need more funds to meet our budget goal, and we want to keep a balance in the bank just in case. So please let me or another FODE board member know if you or any of your acquaintances might be in the position to help out. At this point we can make up the difference with just a few gifts rather than another sizable grant. And of course FODE is a 501(c)(3) non profit, so your gift is tax deductible.

Bath House Repair Update

Posted on: June 21st, 2018 by admin No Comments

Hello swimmers, we just got some good news from the Aquatics Dept. The site testing went well so they are able to proceed with our bath house repairs. First up are the women’s water heaters. The plan is for that to begin next Tuesday, June 26. It should take two or three days to completion, so next week the women’s changing area will need to be blocked off. Alexis tells me they will try and rope off the bathroom area so it will still be usable, as will the family changing room. But by the end of the week there will be new water heaters for the women’s changing room!

Next up should be the men’s area roof structure, which has numerous leaks and rotten wood to be repaired. Hopefully these repairs can go smoothly so as not to disrupt our summer swim season. Thanks for your patience during these repairs.

The annual meeting of Friends of Deep Eddy will be May 1, 2018, at 6:00 pm at the pool. We will elect officers and board members, as well as review any issues of concern about the pool. If you are interested in becoming an officer, please don’t hesitate to self-nominate yourself. I will be stepping down as president. Paul Bargagjy is considering stepping up which will leave the vice-president position option. Please consider helping out with your favorite volunteer organization.

As we enter our 16th year of working to support our favorite pool, I have decided it’s time for me to retire as President of Friends of Deep Eddy, Inc. The current executive committee (Vice-president Paul Bardagjy, Secretary Blake Tollett, and Treasurer Maureen Coulehan) will act as a nominating committee for taking nominations for officer positions. Elections will take place at our annual meeting in early May. Paul Bardagjy has expressed his willingness to step up to serve as President, but we encourage all interested persons to submit their names for any officer position. Please email me your self-nomination or the nomination of another person who you know is willing to serve.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as President of FODE. Working with all of you and our great Aquatics staff has truly been a pleasure these past fifteen years.

FODE President

Hillside Work Schedule

Posted on: October 24th, 2017 by admin No Comments

The hillside well is scheduled for repairs on October 26, 2017. The work will include replacement of the pump motor, pump (if necessary), clean out, and installation of a port to make future cleaning easier and less expensive. The work should take about 4 days. Closure of the pool is not expected to be required.

Due to the need to get roof repairs in the men’s changing room done as soon as possible, it’s possible that the annual maintenance will be done in December rather than January or February. We will keep you posted.

Deepeddy Top Swimming Hole According to the NYT

Deep Eddy was rated #5 on the best places in the world to swim in the New York Times. But we all knew that right?

In Austin, Tex. This is acclaimed as the oldest swimming pool in the state, with a bathhouse built in 1936. The pool — fed from springs — was the centerpiece of the Deep Eddy Bathing Beach, a resort. Lorena’s Diving Horse was a popular attraction.
